MikroMasch Eesti OÜ receives Horizon 2020 SME Instrument Phase 1 funding to develop novel lithium battery cells

Invent Baltics consultants supported an Estonian nanotechnology firm in preparing a successful SME Instrument Phase 1 project proposal to the European Commission Horizon 2020 research and innovation funding program. The project will be funded under the Horizon 2020 “Smart, green and integrated transport” work program.

MikroMasch is developing a novel lithium battery technology that will enable doubling the energy density of rechargeable batteries for electric bicycles, cars and portable devices. During the Phase 1 project, MikroMasch will work on carrying out feasibility assessments including market research, freedom-to-operate analyses and technological feasibility studies, and prepare a detailed business plan for its further development and commercialization activities.

The SME Instrument is a dedicated funding instrument under the Horizon 2020 Research and Innovation program that supports innovative Small and Medium-sized Enterprises in Europe and associated countries. The instrument aims to fill the gaps in funding for research and innovation at early stages and thereby accelerate the exploitation of novel solutions to address key societal challenges or enabling technologies. The SME Instrument Phase 1 funding supports SMEs to cover the funding for initial feasibility assessment and business modeling for the novelty. Phase 2 funding is targeted to SMEs with particular focus on product development, demonstration activities and market replication.

The next cut-off dates for Phase 1 and Phase 2 project proposals are September 17 and November 25, 2015. Invent Baltics OÜ provides initial consultancy regarding funding opportunities within the Horizon 2020 Research and Innovation program free of charge.
